Following the success of last season’s sold out Holiday Concert, the AWC will be singing a selection of festive favorites that were written during that pivotal decade, and other tunes that hearken back to a momentous time.
Complete with a big band and fashions that defined the era, the show presents a story set at turn of that decade, in 1950, using music as a reflection on an era that brought not just war, but social change, cultural shifts, and new inventions that transformed American life.
So, why a mid-century theme? Well, classics that we consider must-haves today – like “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” and “Sleigh Ride”, amongst others, were either drafted, first recorded or even went on to hit the top of the charts in that time. Dr. Melissa Arasi, the AWC’s artistic director, looked closer and knew there was a story to tell; one the women could do in a way never seen or heard before.
“So much holiday music was written during this period of time,” Dr. Arasi said. “When I searched for possible songs for the holiday concert this year, and realized that the 1940’s were so prevalent that it would be a fun way to really pull in issues that happened during that time, with what our world was going through, while also showcasing songs that have stood the test of time.”
The AWC is proud to bring back nostalgic pieces and fond memories that are sure to touch your heart and get your toes tapping. You will see superb costumes, newspaper playbills, old-timey microphones, album covers, and perhaps even a classic car or two.
Join in a unique musical holiday experience with fabulous themes, a stellar script, and the incomparable voices of the Atlanta Women’s Chorus.
