In the guise of satiric exploitation-horror, The Secretaries takes an unflinching look at the warping cultural expectations of femininity. Playing May 2-18, the show follows Pretty Patty Johnson who is thrilled to join the secretarial pool at the Cooney Lumber Mill under the iron-fisted leadership of sultry office manager Susan Curtis. But after some time on the job, she begins to feel that all is not right--the enforced diet of SlimFast shakes, the strange clicking language between the girls and the monthly disappearance of a lumberjack. By the time Patty discovers murder is part of these office killers' skill set, it's too late to turn back!
Featuring a 100% female identifying cast and production team, The Secretaries is directed by Heidi S. Howard, artistic director of 7 Stages Theatre.
"Set in the 1990s, The Secretaries is so fun because it takes participants on an adventure of exploring societal constructs that prevent equality with internalized sexism, emotional violence, negative body image and power disparities in a hilariously absurd story," says Howard. "I am thrilled to collaborate with a powerhouse group of ALL female artists who are RAGING in response to today's political climate, ongoing disregard for self-worth and our possibility to be better humans together. In an effort to break the cycle of shame and today's absurd human division, this production will offer RAW, BLOODY laughter and vital connection as we navigate our vulnerability in these dark days. I rejoice in the opportunity to be courageous WITHOUT APOLOGY!"
