Students from kindergarten through eighth grade will honor veterans and their families in moving ceremony
Perimeter School will host its annual Veterans Celebration on Tuesday, November 12, at 9:45 a.m. at Perimeter Church. The event will mark a quarter century of the school’s honoring servicemen and women of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Veterans, their families and members of the community are invited to attend the program which will include a posting of the colors and a stirring recognition of veterans from each branch of the armed services.
What began as the inspiration of one teacher in 1995 has grown beyond the walls of this school and church to impact the entire community. In 2018, more than 2,500 people, including 280 veterans representing all branches of the military, attended the event.
Many veterans have been so encouraged by the event that they return year after year. Tom Harvey, a veteran of the Air Force and the National Guard, attended his first celebration several years ago after being invited by neighbors. “Before attending Perimeter School’s Veterans Celebration, I never really had the chance to be with a large group of veterans of all ages,” he said. “This provided the perfect opportunity to do so. It is always so touching to see other veterans and hear their stories rather than just know my experience. It always grabs my heart.”
This year’s event features two guest speakers: retired Army Col. Mike Higgins and his wife, Renee Higgins. Mike Higgins served first as a field artillery officer and then as a chaplain in the Army Reserve. Before retiring from the military, he worked at the Pentagon for the Army Chief of Chaplains. He is also a graduate of the Army’s Command and General Staff College.
Together, the Higginses have been serving military families for over 22 years. At the Veterans Celebration, they will share a joint message entitled “Why We Serve,” addressing the service of both those serving in the military and the families who support them.
Mike Higgins currently serves as the senior pastor of South City Church in St. Louis. He and his wife are co-founders of the St. Louis Pastoral Fellowship which seeks to bring racial reconciliation and healing to their community.
Veterans are encouraged to wear their uniforms or insignias indicating their branch of service. A reception for veterans and their family members will immediately follow the celebration. Handicapped parking and building access are available as well as curbside assistance.
“It is a privilege to host this annual celebration to honor veterans and their families,” said Perimeter School Headmaster Jeremy Case. “This event is always a hallmark day full of memorable opportunities both to express our deep appreciation and gratitude but also for the next generation to experience firsthand the stories of service, sacrifice, and citizenry from our servicemen and women.”
