In celebration of this Southern culinary specialty, Jekyll Island will once again host its annual – and award-winning – Shrimp & Grits Festival. From Friday, Sept. 20, through Sunday, Sept. 22, everyone from epicurean novices to discriminating foodies will flock to the barrier island off the coast of Georgia to sample classic and creative takes on this fan-favorite dish.
This one-of-a-kind event has twice been honored as “Best Festival” by the Southeast Festival and Events Association. From a carefully curated array of hand-selected arts and crafts merchants to the Craft Brew Fest and a heavy dose of live music, there’s something for everyone at this affair. And in keeping with the festival’s theme, the weekend’s biggest highlight, as usual, will be the statewide cooking competition. Presented by Quaker, the Saturday contest will feature chefs from popular restaurants representing every region in the state engaging in a heated battle for the coveted title of “Georgia’s Best Shrimp & Grits.”
The three-day Shrimp & Grits soiree also will include the debut of a Go for the Grits 5K road race on Sunday morning. Runners and walkers alike will thoroughly enjoy the beautiful tree-lined race course that winds through the island’s National Historic Landmark District.
Make plans to attend this years festival and taste some of the best shrimp and grits and learn more about this quintessential Southern dish.
