The Cobb County Genealogy Society offers free classes throughout the year teaching people how to do their own research regardless of where their ancestors lived. The next meeting is 22 January 2019 at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Marietta at 7 PM. The presenter, Ms. Maggie Thomas, will be presenting “Name Changes in Genealogy: Undocumented and Legal, Formal, Personal, Immigrant, and More.” You will learn how and why did our ancestors change their last names through the years. Also, Thomas will discuss how and where to look for them.
Ms. Thomas, is a Library Associate in the Cobb County Library System and has been a genealogy research assistant in the Charles Switzer Library’s Georgia Room since 2014. She earned her undergraduate degree in Art History from Georgia Southern University and after graduation worked as an archival assistant in the Special Collections Department of Georgia Southern’s Zach Henderson Library. She is currently enrolled at Valdosta State University earning her Masters of Library and Information Science and is scheduled to graduate in May 2019.
Thomas is currently an active member of the American Library Association, Georgia Library Association, Society of Georgia Archivists, Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta Archives Committee and the Georgia Genealogical Society where she currently serves on the board as the Director of Education.
