Iowa 1962. Men work. Women take care of the home. And young Mary Jo Brickner is about to get married to John Sybil. It’s a typical year in Swisher until Ritva Puotila storms into town and creates the BPW, a secret order of women designed to empower Mary to become the first female valedictorian of the high school....and a whole lot more. A fractured fairy tale where The Music Man meets Gloria Steinem meets the three witches of MacBeth.
Emily McClain is a theatre educator at Buford High School in Buford, Georgia. Her play SLAYING HOLOFERNES was selected as a winner for the Essential Theatre’s New Play Festival, receiving a World Premiere production in July of 2019. She is a proud member of Working Title Playwrights in Atlanta and the Dramatists Guild. Her short plays have been staged at Out of Box Theatre (Santa After Hours 2018 and Women’s Shorts 2019), Merely Players (Amplifest), Atlanta AppCo (Culture Series), Raze The Space (Los Angeles Library Series 2019), Theatre Oxford (Ten-Minute Play Winner 2019), and Actor’s Express (Courtroom Drama Series 2019). She lives in Lawrenceville with her husband Paul, her children Graham and Eleanor, and a sweet old dog named Walter.
Kellie’s wealthy family has offered to take her and her wife, Sarah, on an all-expense paid vacation to Italy. Sarah has never been on such an extravagant trip and is willing to look past some small personal “slights” about their lifestyle for the chance to go on a trip they would not be able to afford otherwise. Kellie, however, feels the trip comes with invisible strings attached and wants to refuse. While Kellie’s parents have never been cruel, they have never been particularly supportive or accepting of Sarah and Kellie’s relationship. How important are principles, really? Especially weighed against the offer of a free first-class vacation?
