"Tarzan" is a Broadway Stage Musical, based on the "Disney" film, with Oscar-winning music by Phil Collins ("You'll Be in My Heart", "Two Worlds", "Son of Man"). The story involves a young orphaned son of an English couple, recently shipwrecked off the coast of Africa. The boy, Tarzan, is raised by a tribe of gorillas to manhood, when a pretty English naturalist crosses his path and teaches him about love and civilized ways.
Under the direction of Ben Toler, Artios Academy of Johns Creek brings a unique flair to this production. According to Choreographer Windy Lane, the dance combines "modern-like movement with gorilla style. We draw from all aspects of dance (African, jazz, modern, hip hop) and bring it into an animal realm." The show also has the added touch of gymnasts who use trampolines and climbing apparatus that are part of the set design. This, along with surprising costumes created by students, under the direction of Brandy Huneycutt, give the illusion that the audience has been transported to the jungle.
From set design, costumes, lighting, sound, crew and cast, approximately 65 Artios high schools students have been involved in all aspects of this production of "Tarzan". "The students are dedicated," says John Lane, Producer of the show and Director of the Artios Conservatory. "Their ultimate goal is doing the best they can with the gifts God gave them."
