Up Your Arts and the City of Southport are happy to announce the return of plein air to our beautiful town. In keeping with previous outdoor painting festivals, a picture-perfect experience is guaranteed, with no end to the variety of delightful scenes just waiting to be captured on canvas. The festival will take place, rain or shine, on May 15 - 16, 2020.
French impressionists turned to outdoor painting – en plein air, or, in the open air – to better observe the many ways light and shadow play with color in landscapes and public scenery. A series of Southport Plein Air Paint Outs sponsored by the city from 2013 to 2016 introduced artists across North Carolina to the coastal panorama we experience everyday, and it became a favorite on the plein air circuit.
Up Your Arts and city officials put Southport back on that map last year by offering an expanded menu of activities involving the painters with area art students, visiting families, and our community at large. The program was such a success, we plan to do it all again: a painting workshop and art auction, along with an early evening winery reception and visits to local galleries, supervised plein air for children with art supplies provided, and up close and personal exposure to remarkable talent at work. A wet paint sale on the last day of the festival showcases the artists’ freshly completed work.
The 2020 Southport Plein Air is open to all painters, regardless of age. It is a non-juried event, with merit and People’s Choice awards conferred by established local artists. Winners will be registered in the 2021 Southport Plein Air Festival free of charge. There is no limit on medium, quantity or size. Painters retain all proceeds from the sale of their work during the wet paint sale.
